Cambrian College Climbs Rankings of Canada’s Research College
SUDBURY – Cambrian College achieved its best year ever in applied research.
For the 10th year in a row, Cambrian has made the list of Canada’s top 50 research colleges, according to Re$earch Infosource, which ranks colleges according to research activity and funding.
In the latest rankings, Cambrian placed 18th overall in Canada, its highest position to date. Cambrian also reached a new goal, with $5.56 million dollars in research income earned.
“This is amazing news and a testament to the hard work our team has done to meet the needs of our industry partners and elevate the College’s research capacity and skills,” says Mike Commito, Director of Cambrian R&D, the College’s applied research division. “The ranking also speaks to the confidence that our partners have in Cambrian to entrust us with these projects. It not only helps them advance their R&D efforts, it also provides our students with the chance to hone their skills on real world problems.”
Nationally, Cambrian ranks third among medium-sized colleges for the number of paid student researchers, with 109.
One of those student researchers is Darby Durrant from Temiskaming Shores, who is a second-year student in Cambrian’s Welding and Fabrication Technician program.
“Applied research has helped me at Cambrian by giving me purposeful work relating to my program,” says Durrant. “Applied research has also allowed me to develop my knowledge and skills in welding and fabrication.”
The latest rankings also show that Cambrian developed 47 partnerships with businesses and organizations on research projects in sectors from mining to medical technologies. One of the strong partners of Cambrian R&D is Ionic Mechatronics. The College is currently on its third collaborative project with Ionic.
“Cambrian R&D has become a strategic extension of our business,” says Andre Dumais, President of Ionic Mechatronics. “Through our partnership with Cambrian R&D, we can leverage the funding and access the resources we need to better serve our clients. Plus we’re very anxious to hire Cambrian’s mechatronics graduates. Congratulations, Cambrian, on your high research ranking ever, and for making our business and the community stronger.”
